Afghan musings

As 2012 ends here are my thoughts about my year in Afghanistan.

- it's a lot better as a civilian over here.

- Last several months been traveling to different bases a lot more
       -even better a packing light.
-vast scenery from snowy mountains, dry mountains, desert, villages, green farmlands, rivers

- Always have a good thick hoodie.
       -Keeps you warm.
-Hood covers your head and neck and you can't lose it like a beanie.
-Good for sleeping- just pull it over your head and lights out.
       -extra pockets.

- Pants. Everyone over here wears cargo pants.
-(in my pockets) Snack, Laundry receipts, tools, gloves, etc
-On another note, I go through them pretty quick. Had to replace 2 cargo pants this year cause of holes

-With some imagination,  I think of myself like Indiana Jones. I get to travel in cool military vehicles and air
transportation to a "foreign exotic land" Instead of fighting Nazi's, its terrorist.

- I keep losing socks. Care package parents send me always have socks. They disappear pretty quick.

-My Iphone hasn't been updated or could synced in like 50 something weeks.

-Some bases are quiet. Others are crowded with people. Others get a lot of indirect fire.

-Where does the fog come from in Camp Leatherneck? I'm original from S.F, 'use to see fog from the ocean
coming in But where does it come from over there. There's no ocean and the for gets pretty thick.
  Morning dew?

-In this war there been close to a 1 to 1 ratio of contractors to military personnel.
     - compared to 50 to 1 in the 1991 gulf war.
     - facts from wiki. But from eyeballing the different bases I've been on. Seems true.
     - probably includes all the TCN(third country nationals)

-Hard to keep in touch with friends and family back home.

-Somedays I work over 12-16 hour days. I feel tired like some investment banker with crazy hours.

-The days I make up for those long days....pretty awesome and lots of sleep.

-U.S bases...I think we like to build bases in valleys surrounded by mountains. So when it rains everything
  floods. /sarcasm.

-work is usually split. 40%ish field work. 60% ish paper work.

-I watch a lot of movies and TV show while doing paper work. These are shows I finished watching in 2012
(some of them are still ongoing) (and I'm still downloading them or buy bootleg Chinese copies.)
  - Supernatural
  - Game of thrones
  - Star Trek Voyager
  - Archer
  - Battle star Galatica
  - HIMYM
  - Big Bang theory
  - Spartacus
  - Chuck
  - Star Trek Enterprise
  - Arrow
  -2 and 1/2 men
  -True blood
  -NCIS
  -American Dad

-hard to keep track and watch sports over here. But usually watch Monday, Thursday and Sunday night
 football games. Go niners!

-In my opinion, hiking shoes are better than boots. More comfortable. Boots only when it starts flooding.

-Probably a fact: Every Marine Corps Unit on LNK have their own makeshift gym in their compounds/lots.

-Whats with the 4 hour early mandatory check-in time for USAF flights?

- wonder how long this war will last?
