You remind me of myself...

"Your remind me of myself when I was younger".  I use to hear that phrase or something similar to it from time to time when I was younger. 8th grade teacher, coaches, Sgt, officers, my current boss and other people older and usually in charge of me. Usually it was after I got in trouble for something or it was something they say right before they give a lecture or advice. It seems like I get that a lot.

My reaction varied depending on who said the phrase. Sometimes I would think "that's a good thing I remind ____   of himself when he was younger. Look how successful he is now." Then I would listen really carefully to what advice they gave. Other times I would think " There can be no way that you were ever like me when you were younger. Look at you now, your a total loser. Man, I hope I don't turn into you when I grow older. What the heck went wrong." Then I would ignore and tune out their advice/lecture/etc because I don't ever want to end up like them.

Now I don't really know what makes me seem like a younger version of people. Maybe they see a path that I'm taking will eventually lead me to where they are now. I don't think that is it. I have a theory and this is going to make me sound really arrogant and maybe delusional.(so stop reading if you dont' have a sense of humor)

There is no way I was like all those people who think I was like them when they were younger. No way. There're all just too different from each other. How can successful people say that and total losers both think they were similar but grow so different.  So when people say that phrase, I think they really mean, I wish I was like you when I was younger. It's admiration of people saying that's the way I should have been. Its the successful guy saying, he's on the right track and its the loser saying that's what I wanted to be.

Does anybody else get that phrase from older people....???
