"Pain is weakness leaving the body." I always thought this was a pretty stupid quote that I heard all the time in the Marine Corps. Found the below post off of reddit. It explains why a lot better than I can so I just copied and paste.
I've always thought that quote is simply a punchier way of saying "discomfort is weakness leaving the body." Which I pretty much agree with. When I finally start running again, is it going to be painful? Not really. I'll be uncomfortable as a motherfucker, but it won't really hurt. Not a real pain, not like being shot, or being stabbed, or the pain of degenerating ligaments or arthritis.
What I think of as pain is really just discomfort. And the more I subject myself to discomfort, the more I get used to it, and the more willing and able I become to put up with more and more of it - in my example of running distance, I am able to run farther, faster. Ergo, the stronger I become
